Short answer
What you need to know
Before submitting an assignment, preserve your working copy, confirm the filename and visible content, resolve comments and tracked changes, inspect metadata and hidden structure, reopen the final export, and make sure you are uploading the intended file. Follow your course rules and treat automated findings as prompts for review, not proof of wrongdoing.
1. Preserve the file you worked from
Keep an unchanged working copy before cleaning or exporting anything. If a question comes up later, the original helps explain your editing process and shows what changed.
Use a clear filename and avoid labels such as final-final or copy that make versions easy to confuse. Confirm the course, assignment, and your own name where appropriate.
2. Review what a normal viewer shows
Read the document from beginning to end, check page order and formatting, and confirm that tables, citations, images, formulas, and links still work.
For Word files, show all markup and review comments and tracked changes. For Excel, inspect every worksheet and confirm formulas and visible ranges. For PDFs, reopen the exported PDF instead of assuming it matches the source.
3. Check what may not be obvious
Review document properties, author metadata, headers, footers, notes, attachments, hidden text, hidden rows or sheets, and unexpected links or embedded objects.
If the assignment file came from someone else, preserve that original too. Unexpected content can come from templates, accessibility features, collaboration, or ordinary editing—not necessarily intent.
4. Inspect the final submission copy
Run the final file through the appropriate inspection workflow, then verify important findings in the original application. Do not automatically delete content you do not understand.
If something unusual could affect grading, accessibility, privacy, or an academic-integrity review, save the evidence and ask the instructor or appropriate office for clarification before the deadline when possible.
5. Confirm the actual upload
Open the file one last time, verify its extension and size, and upload only the intended distribution copy. After submitting, use the learning platform's preview or download option when available to confirm the correct file arrived.
Keep the submission confirmation and follow the course's stated rules for AI tools, collaboration, citations, file formats, and late corrections.
Important limitation
Verify important findings
This checklist cannot interpret a course policy, guarantee acceptance by a learning platform, or prove that a file contains nothing hidden. When requirements are unclear, the instructor or institution is the authoritative source.
